Dernière mise à jour:

Wood and scrap are the two raw resources in Water You Doing?. They serve a dual purpose: they are the primary materials for repairing your ship’s hull, and they can be sold at docks for coins. Managing these resources — knowing when to gather, when to hold, and when to sell — is a core survival skill. This guide covers everything about wood and scrap.

What Wood and Scrap Are Used For

Repairs — Both wood and scrap are used in the repair system. Wood patches are faster to apply but less durable. Scrap patches take longer but are significantly stronger. See our Boat Repair guide for the full mechanics.

Selling — Wood and scrap can be sold at docks for coins. Prices are lower than fish, but they require no fishing minigame — just collection.

Where to Find Wood

Wood appears as floating debris, washed-up wreckage on shorelines, and as loot in certain structures:

  • Floating debris — Most common source. Look for planks and broken wood floating on the water surface. Collect by moving the ship alongside and pressing the interact key.
  • Shoreline wreckage — Near docks and coastal areas, washed-up wood is abundant. Dock and explore the shoreline for quick collection.
  • Abandoned structures — Some hidden zones contain old wooden structures with harvestable wood. These are often in off-route areas tied to the Laba the Frog secret.
  • Post-hazard loot — After surviving a major hazard like a storm or collision with a large vessel, wood debris often spawns nearby.

Where to Find Scrap

Scrap is metal and composite materials useful for strong repairs:

  • Floating scrap — Metal debris, broken machinery, and hull fragments float in the water. Collect the same way as wood — approach and interact.
  • Wrecked vessels — The game world contains other wrecked ships. Salvage scrap from them, but be aware these areas can be hazard zones.
  • Underwater salvage — Some scrap is underwater near wreckage sites. Dive or use a harpoon to碎 submerged debris and collect the pieces.
  • Industrial zones — Certain dock-adjacent areas have industrial waste that counts as scrap. These are usually safe and fast to harvest.

Gathering Efficiency

Collection is not instant — each pickup takes a few seconds of interaction. To maximise gathering efficiency:

  • Designate collection runs — Set aside specific voyages or portions of voyages for pure resource gathering. Do not try to fish and gather simultaneously — split your focus.
  • Use the ship’s speed — Move through debris fields at low speed while a crewmate collects. This covers more ground than stationary collection.
  • Harvest shoreline wrecks — Shoreline wrecks often have concentrated resources. Dock, harvest everything, then continue.

When to Sell Resources vs. Keep for Repairs

This is the central resource management decision in the game. The answer depends on your current situation:

Keep resources when:

  • Hull integrity is below 50% — you need repair materials immediately.
  • You are about to enter a hazard-heavy zone — incoming damage is predictable.
  • You have very few resources and an upcoming long voyage.

Sell resources when:

  • Hull integrity is near 100% and stable — no immediate repair need.
  • You are low on coins and need to buy a critical upgrade.
  • You are full on resources and passing a dock — selling avoids wasting potential collection time.

Resource Management in Co-op

In co-op, one crew member can gather resources while others handle different tasks. Assign the fisherman to also collect floating debris when between catches. Have the engineer maintain an awareness of resource stock levels — calling for collection runs when materials run low.

Upgrade Priority for Resource Gathering

The shop sells upgrades relevant to resource management:

  • Storage Expansion — Increases how many resources you can carry. Priority buy when you constantly run out of inventory space.
  • Collection Speed Upgrade — Makes each pickup faster. Useful if you do a lot of resource gathering.

FAQ

Questions fréquentes

Réponses rapides aux questions les plus courantes.

Can I run out of resources permanently?

No. Wood and scrap respawn in the world. The total amount available in any given area is finite per session, but it resets when you restart the game or return to an area.

Is it worth selling resources instead of fish?

Generally no. Fish earn significantly more coins per slot in your inventory. Sell resources only when you need coins urgently and have a full inventory of fish you do not want to part with.

What is the best ratio of wood to scrap to carry?

Carry more scrap than wood — scrap patches are stronger and more efficient. A ratio of roughly 30% wood to 70% scrap is a good default, adjusting based on the types of breaches you are seeing.

Do resources persist between sessions?

No. Fish and resources in your ship's inventory are cleared when a session ends. Only purchased upgrades and earned coins persist.
