Quest System Guide

Water You Doing? used to dump you on a leaking boat and assume you would invent your own plan. Demo Hotfix 6 changed that. DiSolve Studios added a quest system so the trip toward Nurwa has readable objectives, waypoints, and a distinction between jobs you must finish and jobs you can ignore. The full August 26, 2026 release ships with that system already in. This page explains how to read it, how not to fight the HUD, and how quests sit next to fishing, repairs, and harpoons.

If you played the June demo and then jumped into 1.0, the difference is immediate. You are no longer guessing whether a dock, a gate, or a strange island is “the next thing.” The game now tells you. That does not make the physics kinder. It just means you can spend your attention on leaks and mines instead of wandering in circles.

Why the quest system exists

The studio added quests after players reported that progression in the demo felt muddy. Checkpoints existed, navigation signs were added in later hotfixes, and still people missed the gate, the fish-selling stand, or the next lake. A quest list is a cheap, readable way to say “pay here,” “deliver that,” or “reach this stretch of water” without a ten-minute tutorial.

Treat quests as a compass, not a script. Water You Doing? still rewards leaving the beaten path for scrap, rare fish, and Laba the Frog clues. Completing every optional marker is not required to keep the boat alive. Completing the main chain is how you actually arrive at Nurwa.

Main quests versus side quests

After Patch 06.09H, main-quest and side-quest waypoints were visually separated because they used to look too similar. Read the colour and brightness of a marker before you steer toward it. A dark, quiet ping is usually a side job. A brighter, persistent marker is usually the voyage itself.

Main quests typically cover:

  • Reaching the next named stretch of water or checkpoint.
  • Paying a gate or similar progress lock with the physical wallet.
  • Keeping the boat in a state where the next area can load (you cannot “quest skip” a sunk hull).

Side quests typically cover:

  • Detours, deliveries, or local odd jobs that pay extra coins or junk.
  • Optional exploration beats that sit near caves, lagoons, and abandoned structures.
  • Flavour tasks that exist so a four-player crew has something to argue about.

If the HUD is a mess of markers, hide the optional layer. That is a first-class feature, not a debug leftover.

Hide optional objectives with Z

Hotfix 7 added a toggle: press Z to hide optional objectives. Use it in mine fields, boulder drops, and any moment when the lookout needs a clean horizon. You can bring the extras back the same way when the water calms down.

This matters more in co-op than it looks. Clients already had a bug where quests did not display correctly; that was fixed in the same hotfix. If you are joining a friend’s session and you see nothing, check that you are not hiding optionals and missing the main marker. Then check that the host actually accepted the current quest. Reloading the session is still a valid last resort after a checkpoint load — Patch 06.09H also fixed pause breaking after some checkpoint loads.

Waypoints, popups, and joining late

Patch 06.09H added an on-join popup so late crew members are not dropped onto a moving deck with zero context. Read it. It is shorter than arguing over voice chat about where the boat is going.

Waypoints can sit on docks, gates, fish-selling stands, and open water. They are not a promise that the path is safe. A marker on the far side of a mine line still expects you to use the harpoon or steer around. A marker on land while the boat-on-land alarm is screaming means you should get wet again, not force the hull over rocks.

If two markers overlap, assume the brighter one is the main quest unless you just pressed Z. Side-quest waypoints were deliberately darkened so they stop competing with the voyage.

How quests interact with the rest of the loop

Quests do not replace the survival loop. You still fish for coins, patch the hull, and keep a Golden Fish for revives. A quest that says “reach the next dock” fails the moment the boat is kindling. Do the objective on top of the loop, not instead of it.

Useful habits:

  • Check the hull before you chase a marker. A two-minute detour with a 30 percent hull is how runs die.
  • Sell fish when a quest parks you at a stand anyway. Hotfix 4 reworked fish selling so you no longer have to dump the catch in one tiny designated square. Use that when a quest already wants you at a dock.
  • Do not skip the wallet at gates. Hotfix 6 and 7 both touched wallet scale, gate payment, and giving change. If a quest stalls on a closed gate, you are probably holding the wrong item or standing on the wrong side of the counter.
  • Solo players should hide optionals by default. You cannot steer, bail, fish, and hunt three side markers at once. Follow the main chain until the boat is upgraded.

Demo versus full release

The June demo received Hotfixes 1 through 7 plus Patches 06.09G and 06.09H. Those notes mention a “final lake in the demo” and demo progression triggers. The full game disabled that demo the day before launch because it was already outdated. Do not follow a year-old demo video as if every island still exists in the same place. Use quests and the in-game map as the live source, and treat community clips as mood, not cartography.

The 1.0 build still uses the same ideas: checkpoints, signs, a physical wallet, a goldfish that must actually be spent at the revive toilet, and a quest list that can be decluttered. If a YouTuber’s HUD looks empty, they may have optional objectives hidden.

Crew roles around quests

Give one person the job of reading the quest list out loud. That person is not automatically the captain. In a four-player boat, the lookout can own markers while the engineer owns leaks. When a side quest would pull you into a spider coast or a boulder canyon, the captain decides whether the detour is worth the hull.

If clients cannot see a quest the host can see, stay put for a few seconds after joining, then toggle Z twice. If it is still blank, the host should avoid loading a checkpoint in the middle of a payment interaction — several demo patches had to fix wallets and rods losing contents in storage after those loads.

Quests will not save a chaotic physics game from itself. They will stop you from missing the gate. For the rest of the voyage, stay on the Getting Started loop and keep reading the water.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do I have to finish every side quest to reach Nurwa?

No. Side quests are optional detours. Hide them with Z when the HUD is noisy, and only chase them when the hull is stable and you want extra coins or exploration.

Why do my waypoints look almost identical?

That was a demo-era problem. Patch 06.09H made main and side waypoints easier to tell apart and darkened side markers. Update the game if an old build still blends them together.

I joined a friend’s boat and I see no quests.

Hotfix 7 fixed client quest display. Make sure optional objectives are not hidden, wait for the on-join popup, and ask the host to confirm the current main marker.

Is the quest system in the full release or only the demo?

It shipped in demo Hotfix 6 and remains in the August 26, 2026 release. The standalone demo itself was disabled the day before launch.
