Water You Doing Inventory & Money
Three pockets, no more physical wallets — how Hotfix #2 changed carrying and spending.
Retail Hotfix #2 (“Hotfixes and New Inventory!”) is the biggest quality-of-life change since Water You Doing? launched. Personal inventory jumped from one slot to three, and money stopped being a physics prop you had to ferry across a bouncing deck. This guide explains the new rules, what older demo footage gets wrong, and how to combine pockets, boat storage, and docks without drowning in clutter.
Pair this with Fishing, Shop Items, and Resources. For the dated patch text, see Updates.
Personal inventory: 1 slot → 3 slots
At launch, each player’s personal inventory was a single slot. That made every trip across the deck a comedy of juggling: fish in hand, scrap on the floor, tool forgotten at the stern. Hotfix #2 expands personal inventory to three slots while keeping management meaningful. You still cannot pocket the entire lake — you just stop dropping half the run every time you grab a bucket.
Practical habits with three slots:
- Keep one emergency slot free when the bilge is rising. A free hand for a bucket or wood patch beats a third shiny fish.
- Separate roles. Captain might hold a tool and a flare; fisher holds rod-related catches; repair lead keeps wood/scrap ready.
- Boat storage is still king for bulk. Personal slots are for transit and emergencies, not a warehouse.
- Dropped items on the boat now save (same hotfix). Leaving a pile on deck is less scary, but do not wedge scrap under the helm — collision bugs still hurt.
- Hovering drops were fixed. If an item floats above the deck on an old clip, that footage is outdated.
Spider and revive notes from the same patch matter for inventory pressure: the spider should only kill its intended victim, and revive fixes reduce the “everyone is down, pockets full of useless trash” spiral. See Golden Fish Revival and Hazards.
Money is now virtual
Before Hotfix #2, money behaved like a physical object — wallets, outlines, gate payments that needed the right prop in the right place. That spawned replication bugs (clients getting double coins), lost wallets in storage, and hilarious but frustrating deck treasure hunts when you just wanted to buy a plank.
Hotfix #2 rewrites money as a virtual currency, similar to how repair materials are tracked. You no longer need to carry, store, or shuffle physical money items around the boat. Selling fish credits the balance; shops and gates spend from that balance. The fantasy of “find the wallet under the fish” is gone on purpose.
What this changes for guides and videos:
- Trailer-era and demo clips showing physical wallets are historical, not current UI.
- Gate payments no longer depend on finding a wallet scale prop mid-panic (demo Hotfix 6 context).
- Double-money client bugs tied to physical replication should largely disappear; if a client still sees a wrong balance, relog and re-host.
- Coin strategy is cleaner: fish → sell → upgrade, without an inventory tax on cash itself.
Boat storage versus pockets
The ship still has finite storage and module slots. Personal inventory expansion does not replace hull storage upgrades from the shop. Prioritise:
- Hull reinforcement and harpoon capacity before vanity items — see Shop Items.
- Ship storage expansion when three personal slots are still not enough for long detours.
- Sell cadence. Rare fish still deserve a dock trip; virtual money just means the dock trip is about fish and materials, not hunting wallets.
Demo Hotfix 4 lowered fish sell prices and made sell points less finicky. That economy still applies — virtual money does not inflate fish values.
Performance and caves
The same hotfix added GPU/CPU work aimed at lower-end PCs and optimised Storm Cave and Elevator Cave. If your inventory screen stutters only in those areas, drop graphics toward Medium (demo Hotfix 1 default) before blaming the three-slot UI.
Tutorials are coming
DiSolve acknowledged that boat, repairs, items, and objectives are still under-explained. They are building additional tutorials and clearer in-game guidance for future updates. Until those land, this wiki page and Getting Started are the stand-in briefing for new crews.
Quick loop after Hotfix #2
- Fish with a free personal slot for the catch.
- Sell at a dock — balance updates virtually.
- Buy hull or harpoon upgrades without hunting a wallet.
- Park bulk scrap/wood in boat storage; keep patches in a pocket when storms hit.
- Drop overflow on deck only when needed — it should persist after save now.
Master that loop and the sea still tries to kill you, but your pockets stop doing the studio’s job for them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many personal inventory slots do I have now?
Three, as of retail Hotfix #2. Launch day had only one. Update Steam if you still see a single slot.
Do I still carry physical money?
No. Hotfix #2 made money a virtual currency like repair materials. Older wallet footage is outdated.
Do items dropped on the boat save?
Yes after Hotfix #2. Dropped deck items should persist, and hovering/floating drops were fixed.
Did fish prices go up with virtual money?
No. Demo Hotfix 4 had already lowered sell prices. Virtual money removes the wallet prop, not the economy numbers.
